thank you Switzerland

June 15th, 2008 | By: j | 7 Comments »

I wish to offer my congratulations to Switzerland on their 2-0 victory over Portugal, on two goals by Basel’s Hakan Yakin. It was a fitting conclusion to their Euro campaign as well as Jakob Kuhn’s long reign as head coach of Switzerland’s national team.

I know through the balance of the month each of will be entertained with spectacular play and eventually one nation will be crowned European champions. However when that time comes, I also hope we look back to the Swiss squad, who played on through many difficult moments and fought to the last moment to bring honour to the wonderful people of Switzerland. In the world of sport, today’s performance was a shining example of brilliance of sport.

Oy! Hakan Yakin is currently still under contract at BSC Young Boys Bern! Not the millionarios club FC Pharmaceutical from Basel!

I was referring to the point that Hakan Yakin was born in Basel. What an incredible thing for this to score two goals in his hometown for Switzerland. It really is a great story-line when you consider everything he has went through including making the conscious choice of playing for Switzerland.

Hehe. As a YB supporter, I hope this good performance won’t give him any good opportunities to leave. We need him to win the title next year.

It is a great reminder of the true message of the sport. Amongst all the stories of big-name players getting enormous contracts a player who turned down the opportunity to play for another country to play for his birth-nation, scores two goals in his hometown. It may not get a great deal of publicity but this must rank as one of the best stories of Euro 2008.

Indeed. It’s a pity it didn’t happen to Frei too.
Thanks for this great post, j. You know the whole of Switzerland is for Austria tonight!

It’ll be a great match with plenty of emotion. As far as the post, I think the Swiss team has been one of the best examples of the sport in a long time. Very true about Alexander but will be back, although I sure wish he had stayed at Rennais
